Up to the early 192os, the country was a battlefield for mainly, but not always, a cold war between Britain, Russia and the United States over oil, power and money, each power having its own geographical sphere of influence and local collaborators. The upheaval came to end with yet another coup d'etat in 1921 by Reza Khan who founded a new dynasty, the Pahlavi, who ruled Iran until the Islamic revolution in 1979. Iran was not formed as a new geopolitical reality by the European powers as some of the new Arab states were, but its sovereignty and its political culture were, very much like the rest of the region, informed by colonialist intervention and ideologies.

In Iraq and Egypt, the renegotiations were the pretext for military coups that brought an end to foreign rule. In other countries, mainly those where monarchies were in effective control, revisions were made without undermining the old regimes. But as the century went on, even these traditional heads of state demanded, and eventually received, full independence. 10 West of Egypt matters looked less promising. Its adjacent neighbour, Libya, at first was granted independence by the League of Nations in 1919, but fell prey soon after to the imperial ambitions of Benito Mussolini.
