The structure of an optically addressed DKDP device [72] is shown in Fig. 9a. A Se photoconductor and 170 ~m DKDP crystal are used. Voltage applied between the electrodes divides between the PC and DKDP, most across the PC. When exposed to write light, charges are created and drift to the crystal-PC interface, causing a field to develop across the crystal (30 ~sec write time). Readout is in reflection by the Pockels effect. When the applied voltage is reduced to zero and the PC is flooded, the trapped charge migrates (3000 ~sec erase) to the electrodes and the device is erased.

COHERENT OPTICAL COMPUTING 33 Another recent development [64] has overcome an objection common to many OALMs: the necessity for two different wavelengths of light for writing and reading. In coherent optical processing, this causes considerable difficulty. We have recently demonstrated a technique for writing NaF where only one wavelength of coherent light is needed. This is of extreme importance in holographic recording and correlation. By simultaneously illuminating the sample with broadband radiation from a Hg arc lamp and a coherent 508 nm Argon laser (with the input data placed in the Argon beam), the ionization of M centers can be inhibited in those regions of the sample illuminated by both beams (bright areas of the image).

Undoped LiNb03 can be fixed by heating to 1000e for 30 min, cooling, and reexposing. LiNb0 3 :Fe can be fixed by recording (20 sec-2 min) on it at elevated temperatures (150°C) and cooling it before heating for another exposure. 5 sec after recording [74]. Sensitivity has been a problem in these materials. Remarkable progress [75] has been made in iron doped LiNb0 3 .
