Lady Mary Wortley Montague, wife of the British ambassador to Constantinople, described this practice in a letter to a friend in 1717, and imported the idea to England on her return, following which the practice of inoculation became widespread there.

This French chemist evolved into a bacteriologist, and he was a towering figure of 19th century bacteriology and preventive medicine.
