Complicating the issue enormously is the lack of a normal range for a particular brain region and clinical situation. One missing variable is regional metabolic rate. For example, pentobarbital coma lowers both CMR02 and CBF in equivalent fashion (37). It would therefore make no physiological sense to keep CBF in such an individual within the 'normal range'. But the situation is unfortunately rarely so clear as in pentobarbital coma. The interaction of cerebral pathology with anesthetic agents and other drugs (38) can have unpredictable effects on CBF, and even on the relationship between CBF and CMR02 (35).

Estrogen The physiological role of estrogen in lung maturation is not clear. In most species there is a considerable increase in estrogen levels towards the end of gestation and it has been shown in the rabbit that administration of estrogen to the mother results in significant enhancement of fetal lung surfactant production (23). In organ culture, however, high levels of this steroid were required to produce an increase in surfactant phospholipid synthesis (24). Thus the direct effects of estrogen in vitro were not noted at physiological levels.
