In many African societies, bridewealth marriage confers upon a man the privilege of claiming all a woman's children, even those conceived after his death, as his own; they become members of his lineage and are known as the children of the deceased man. Fatherhood is thus socially defined as being associated with legitimate marriage rather than with biological paternity.
